Foundation Adjoa developed a multipurpose centre in the village of Ahotokurom, just north of the coastal town of Elmina.
The building’s primary function is to provide a home for young people with physical disabilities, enabling them to live semi-independently in a supportive environment.

Together with a small team of students, we conducted a feasibility study based on a preliminary design by Information Based Architecture (IBA). This study included architectural, structural, and financial assessments, as well as consultations with local stakeholders.

In our report, we recommended using locally available materials wherever possible, limiting the use of concrete to essential structural elements, and designing the building entirely around natural ventilation principles. We also proposed a covered rooftop terrace with large solid wooden shutters, offering panoramic views over the expansive marshlands.

Following our study, the project was handed back to IBA for further development. Since 2012, the first wing of the building has been completed. The timeline for the next phase remains uncertain.
