House Afidi
Commissioned by: Ms. A. Towo
Location: Toubab Dialaw, Senegal
Year: 2015
Status: under construction
Afidi Towo, being half French and half Cameroonian, has travelled extensively across the African continent and now resides in Senegal.
She commissioned a modern home that blends diverse African architectural styles, reflecting both her heritage and personal vision.
At the time of involvement, the foundation and several walls had already been constructed. Upon reviewing the existing floor plans, it became clear that the layout was overly dark, enclosed, and impractical. We therefore reimagined the entire spatial arrangement, and with it, the architectural concept.
The new design embraces an organic and warm aesthetic, with open spaces and thoughtful detailing that make the house truly personal. Built-in cupboards, wardrobes, and low partition walls create a sense of order and simplicity, while rounded adobe finishes maintain a homely atmosphere. In keeping with local building culture, elements such as windows, doors, shutters, and other details will not be fixed on paper, but instead developed through a collaborative process — sourcing quality (often secondhand) materials and working closely with skilled local craftspeople.
